Why purposeful walking pays off more

Every step counts, but some more

More and more research confirms it. Sitting still too much shortens your life. Moving more prolongs it. But does it matter what steps you take? And exactly how many you need? A group of British researchers figured it out.

They followed 78,500 healthy participants. Everyone wore a pedometer for seven days. Seven to nine years later, the researchers reviewed their health again.

The result was clear: those who walked more were at lower risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. And lived longer on average.

Purposeful walking delivers more

The researchers split the steps into two types. Accidental steps: what you take casually around the house or office. And purposeful steps: a deliberate, brisk walk.

The difference? Five thousand targeted steps gave similar health effects as 10,000 total steps. Pace also made a difference. Those who stepped faster had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Starting small also helps

You don't have to reach 10,000 steps right away. Even the step from 1,000 to 2,000 a day produces measurable results. Every increase counts.

Want to get the most out of your hike? Then choose a brisk, deliberate walk. Just picking up the pace makes all the difference.
