Practical steps after a loved one’s passing

During this difficult time, we’re here to help you as much as we can. On this page, you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about the reimbursement of insurance premiums and medical expenses, as well as the documents you need to provide. Our aim is to make the administrative side of things as clear and straightforward as possible.

Reimbursement of insurance premiums

If a relative passes away, you should inform us as soon as possible and provide the exact date of death. We’ll check whether the deceased paid a personal insurance premium to Vanbreda Health Care and let you know. We’ll also explain how you can reclaim any premiums that may have been overpaid.

Reimbursement of medical costs in the event of death

Following a death, you may continue to receive medical bills in the name of the deceased for some time. You can still submit these expenses to us for reimbursement according to the terms of the deceased person’s insurance policy. When we reimburse medical costs to the next of kin, we’re required to follow a legal procedure. This procedure depends on your situation:

Sole legal heir

Are you the sole legal heir of the deceased? Then provide us with a certificate of inheritance or deed of succession confirming this. You can request this document from your notary. We also need a power of attorney authorising us to reimburse medical expenses to you as the legal heir. On the power of attorney form, please state the IBAN account number to which we should transfer any reimbursements.

Multiple heirs

If there are two or more legal heirs, the same procedure applies as for a sole heir. Please provide us with a certificate of inheritance or deed of succession together with a power of attorney for reimbursements. Please note: medical expenses can be reimbursed to one bank account only. All heirs must therefore agree on the account number to be used. Any heirs aged 18 or over must provide an individual power of attorney. This power of attorney must list the designated beneficiary and the corresponding account number for reimbursements.

Reimbursement via notary

If a notary has been appointed to administer the estate of the deceased, we can transfer any reimbursements directly to them. The notary will then handle the practical arrangements and distribute the reimbursements to the surviving relatives. Would you like us to transfer reimbursements to the notary? If so, please ensure that the notary provides us with the bank account number to which we can transfer any payments. We also need a statement from the notary formally releasing Vanbreda Health Care from any further legal responsibility relating to the reimbursement of medical expenses. This ensures that we can process the reimbursements smoothly.
