Reimbursement of doctor’s visits

Seeing your family doctor or a specialist? On this page, you’ll find out which costs we reimburse and how to submit your expenses easily, so we can process them quickly.

Which consultation costs do we reimburse?

If your consultation with your doctor or specialist is directly related to a hospital admission that we’ve previously approved for reimbursement, and it takes place within the official pre- or post-admission period of the hospitalisation, your doctor’s visit is covered by Vanbreda Health Care. You’re also covered if the consultation is directly linked to an ongoing serious illness case. Outpatient care is covered if you’re enrolled in the supplementary outpatient plan. The amount of the reimbursement depends on your individual policy plans and your applicable personal contribution (copay).

Which documents do you need to submit for reimbursement?

After your consultation, your doctor or specialist will send the electronic certificate (eAttest) directly to your health insurance fund. This means that patients only pay their personal contribution (copay) and any supplements. To submit your costs via the Vanbreda App or web portal, ask your doctor for the proof of medical care (the so-called ‘bewijsstuk geneeskundige verzorging patiënt’ in Dutch). This certificate lists all costs in detail. Alternatively, you can also submit the reimbursement statement from your health insurance fund after they’ve reimbursed you.

If your doctor doesn’t work under the third-party payment scheme, you will receive a standard medical certificate (the ‘getuigschrift voor verstrekte hulp’ in Dutch), which you can submit to your health insurance fund. You can then upload the reimbursement statement from your health insurance fund via the Vanbreda App or the web portal.

Checklist: what items must feature on a certificate or proof of payment?

  • Date of the consultation or doctor’s visit

  • Patient’s name

  • Name of the doctor or specialist

  • The relevant medical procedure code (nomenclature number), which indicates what type of medical service was performed

  • Amount charged for the consultation

How to submit costs for reimbursement?

You can easily submit your documents via the Vanbreda App or the web portal. Do you have a personal account? Then it only takes a few moments. Don’t have an account yet? Create your personal account with itsme® or with your e-mail address. Using the web portal, you can also submit costs on behalf of someone else as a non-registered user.

Contracted and non-contracted doctors

A contracted doctor or specialist adheres to the rate agreement (convention) determined between healthcare providers and health insurance funds. In this case, you only pay the official personal contribution (copay).

A non-contracted doctor or specialist sets their own rates and fee supplements. As a result, you’ll pay a larger share of the total cost of your doctor’s visit yourself.
